Why Insurers Are Watching Your Energy Usage More Closely Than Ever

Insurers are quietly reshaping how they choose bodyshop partners and energy performance is now part of the picture. Here’s why ARIES matters commercially and what it means for your place on the network.
Read Time: 5 Minutes

For most of its history, the relationship between a bodyshop and an insurer has been built on two things: repair quality and turnaround time. Get the work done well and get it done quickly, and you hold your place on the network.

That is still true. But a third factor is quietly becoming just as important, and a lot of bodyshop owners have not fully registered it yet.

The Sustainability Shift in Insurance

The UK insurance industry has made significant public commitments around sustainability and net zero. Those commitments do not stop at the insurer’s own operations. They extend into their supply chains, which means the bodyshops that carry out repairs on their behalf.

Insurers are increasingly asking how their approved repairers operate from an environmental standpoint. How much energy does your site consume? What emissions does your operation produce? What are you doing to reduce them?

These are not questions being asked out of curiosity. They are being factored into decisions about repairer panel composition.

What ARIES Has to Do With It

ARIES gives insurers a consistent, credible framework through which to assess the environmental performance of their repairer networks. Rather than relying on self-reported claims or unverified statements, they can look at where a bodyshop sits within the ARIES maturity model and draw meaningful conclusions.

A bodyshop that is actively progressing through ARIES is demonstrating measurable environmental commitment. One that has no engagement with the framework at all is increasingly difficult to defend as a long-term network partner.

The bodyshops that understand this early are using ARIES participation as a genuine commercial differentiator. The ones that do not are leaving themselves exposed.

The Energy Cost Argument Stands on Its Own

Even setting aside the insurance network dynamic entirely, the financial argument for getting your energy under control is straightforward.

Energy remains one of the largest operating costs in a bodyshop. The spraybooth alone can account for a significant proportion of your total site consumption. Compressors, heating, lighting and extraction all add to that picture.

Most bodyshops have never had those costs broken down in any meaningful detail. They know roughly what they spend, but not where it goes, which systems are running efficiently and which are not, or what a realistic reduction programme would save them.

That lack of visibility is expensive. Not dramatically so in any single month, but consistently and quietly over years.

Measured Data Changes the Conversation

One of the most important distinctions in any serious energy conversation is the difference between estimated and measured data.

Estimates are based on averages, assumptions and billing data. Measured data comes from actual monitoring of your specific systems in your specific operation. The two can look very different.

When you are talking to an insurer about your environmental performance, or making a case internally for investment in more efficient equipment, measured data carries significantly more weight than estimates. It is harder to argue with and easier to act on.

This is a distinction that matters at every stage of the ARIES journey, and it is central to how Rowley’s Energy Assessment Service approaches the work.

The Window to Get Ahead Is Still Open

The bodyshops in the strongest position right now are not necessarily the ones with the most efficient operations. They are the ones that know their numbers, have a plan in place, and can demonstrate progress.

That is an achievable position for any bodyshop willing to take the first step. The question is whether you get there on your own timeline or on someone else’s.
